Man Crusades Against Asbestos

-December 11, 2007

A man living in West Virginia is beating the odds and takes each day at a time while living with mesothelioma.

Phil Lake awakes each day knowing he has survived yet another day; however, he also faces the fact that one day the fatal disease will take his life.

Mesothelioma Victim Maintains Health

Phil Lake, 47, knows that he and his family are blessed with each passing day as he fights his cancer.

Lake has reportedly had one lung and a part of the other removed, although he still appears to be quite healthy.

Most people living with mesothelioma don't live to talk about it eight years after, as Lake has. Typically, patients don't survive two years.

Workplace Exposure

Lake worked as a maintenance mechanic and laborer at various power plants during his early years of employment.

Many of the equipment he worked with and around was insulated with asbestos.

“I didn't even know what asbestos was,” explains Lake. “At some point in my work history, we started being told asbestos is dangerous and we needed to be careful around it.”

Family Makes Decision to Fight

“As a family, we made a decision. Are our last memories going to be good ones or are we going to be defeated?” says Lake.

Lake and his family say that they have made a decision to fight the disease any way that they possibly can.
