Research Shows Benefits of Vinflunine

-November 14, 2007

According to a recent report from the October issue of the Journal of Clinical Oncology, high-dose vinflunine reportedly provides several benefits to patients who have malignant pleural mesothelioma.

Numerous treatments have been done for malignant pleural mesothelioma, say the authors of the study.

However, response rates are low and no survival advantage has been demonstrated thus far.

Researchers Test Response Rates

Dr. Denis C. Talbot from the Churchill Hospital in Oxford, UK, addressed the response rate and overall survival of 67 patients who are living with malignant pleural mesothelioma, in a recent study.

The overall response rate, which was analyzed by an independent radiologist, was 13.8% and most patients either maintained 60% or improved by 13.8%.

The median progression-free survival was reportedly 3.2 months, the median overall survival was 10.8 months and the one-year was 36.9%.

Result Conclusions

“These results suggest that vinflunine is among the most active single agents in malignant pleural mesothelioma,”claim the authors of the study. “The results of our study, in terms of response rate and survival, suggest that vinflunine should be further evaluated in malignant pleural mesothelioma because no therapy is available in this setting.”
