Peritoneal Mesothelioma Treatment Found

Effective Peritoneal Mesothelioma Treatment Found

According to researchers, an effective peritoneal mesothelioma treatment has been found with a combination treatment.

The discovery was revealed during a multicenter U.S. trial involving the combination treatment using Alimta and Gemzar.

What is Peritoneal Mesothelioma?

Peritoneal mesothelioma is a less common form of pleural mesothelioma, which is a fatal form of cancer caused by asbestos exposure.

Symptoms of peritoneal mesothelioma typically don’t become apparent for 20-30 years and a cure for the illness has yet to be found.

Finding a Treatment for Peritoneal Mesothelioma

Up until now, the most common peritoneal mesothelioma treatment has surgery in combination with chemotherapy.

However, many question just how effective chemotherapy actually is in ridding the body of the cancerous cells.

Since there have been few studies on chemotherapy for peritoneal mesothelioma, treatment regimens have been derived strictly from studies of patients with pulmonary mesothelioma.

Mesothelioma Study Conducted

The most recent findings stem from a study involving 20 patients who were treated for the illness between 2002 and 2004.

Patients reportedly received the combination treatment of Alimta and Gemzar over the duration of 21 days and researchers claim the results were positive and it could be used as a beneficial alternative treatment for the illness.
