A school in Stanley County, North Carolina, is currently facing fines cited by the Department of Labor for allegedly not informing staff members about asbestos cancer problems.
Asbestos was reportedly found in the insulation of the school’s building unknown to employees and students.
Day School Fined for Asbestos
Gray Stone Day School has been located in the 60-year-old Harris Science Building at the Pfeiffer University campus for the past six years.
However, the school was fined $350 due to asbestos cancer problems that weren’t reported and now the school is being forced to move locations.
School Needs Money for New Building
Now that the asbestos issue has been made public, school officials are looking for an alternative building and are holding fund raisers.
“We have gotten some of the money raised,” explains Helen Nance, a representative for the school. “We still need $200,000 to be able to start and it’s just really, really hard.”
Asbestos Funding to Move School
According to reports, the state of North Carolina has set aside 40 percent of their lottery proceeds for school construction.
However, since Gray Stone is a charter school they aren’t eligible to have access to that money.
