A study regarding a mining related illness has reportedly gained approval by the Minnesota Senate.
The broad approval reportedly avoided a debate that would have pitted Iron Range DFL lawmakers against Republicans in the House.
Research Proposed
According to reports, the research was proposed last year after it was announced that 58 Iron Range miners were diagnosed with mesothelioma.
Mesothelioma is a type of cancer that is caused by exposure to asbestos.
Concerns about the problems with mining dust have been ongoing for decades in the Iron Range part of the country.
How the Research Will be Conducted
The research will reportedly be conducted by the University of Minnesota before it is reviewed by a scientific panel.
The research will analyze the health of the miners and their spouses, study the health records and occupations of the miners who have already died, and analyze the air quality around the mines.
