Mesothelioma Testing at UC Irvine

-April 17, 2008

Rosetta Genomics, Ltd., which is a leading developer of microRNA-based diagnostic and therapeutic products, has announced today that it is joining with UC Irvine’s School of Medicine to do tests regarding mesothelioma.

The tests have reportedly been designed to help differentiate mesothelioma from adenocarcinoma, in addition to identifying the origins of other types of cancer.

Researchers Are Hopeful

“With its experienced research team and state-of-the-art CLIA-certified laboratory, UC Irvine is an excellent collaborator for tests developed applying our microRNA technology,” says a spokesman for Rosetta Genomics.

Researchers believe that this is an important step to bringing answers to both doctors and patients regarding various types of cancer, including mesothelioma.

What are MicroRNAs?

MicroRNAs, also known as miRNAs, are naturally occurring RNAs that serve as master regulators and have the capability to form a new class of therapeutics.

Since many illnesses are caused by abnormal protein activity, the ability to regulate this using microRNAs could enable doctors with a way to treat many life-threatening diseases.

According to reports from Rosetta Genomics, the first microRNA diagnostic test will be conducted by clinical laboratories in the U.S. in 2008.
