According to a recent report issued by the American Journal of Industrial Medicine, in the next 10 to 20 years a mesothelioma cancer epidemic will descend upon Libby, Montana.
A group of doctors created the report with backing from research they have conducted over the past few years regarding the asbestos cancer problems in the small mining town.
Dr. Alan Whitehouse, a pulmonogist leading asbestos cancer diseases treatment in Libby wrote the report with four colleagues.
Residents Continue to Battle Mesothelioma Cancer
Due to the W.R. Grace mine that has operated for decades near the town, current and former residents in Libby have been exposed to asbestos cancer.
Whitehouse has treated hundreds of patients in Libby who are suffering from mesothelioma cancer and other asbestos cancer illnesses.
“The extent of the epidemic of environmental mesothelioma cancer due to exposures based at Libby will probably not peak for another 10 to 20 years,” says the report. “This is a public health problem of considerable magnitude and points to the need for surveillance and early detection of the disease.”
Mesothelioma Cancer Cases in Montana
A total of 31 mesothelioma cancer cases have been linked to Libby Montana asbestos cancer in the past couple of decades.
The report also claims 11 cases involve a victim who had no direct exposure to asbestos but simply spent time in Libby.
