According to the Mesothelioma Cancer & Asbestos Awareness Center, those living in Iowa could be at risk of being exposed to asbestos cancer.
The elevated risk comes in the aftermath of the flooding that occurred throughout the Midwest and now health officials are concerned about the hazardous substances residents could be exposed to as the waters recede.
As cleanup crews begin rebuilding the communities affected by the floods many are concerned that their asbestos exposure could cause health problems.
Air Quality Monitored for Asbestos
The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has been monitoring the air quality throughout the state to ensure the level of asbestos fibers in the air is kept to a minimum.
Asbestos is a harmful carcinogen that can cause fatal illnesses such as mesothelioma cancer when inhaled or ingested.
