Asbestos Putting U.S. Schools at Risk

-January 15, 2008

The Mesothelioma and Asbestos Awareness Center (MAAC) recently found that asbestos exposure at schools throughout the U.S. is becoming a growing problem.

Asbestos is a harmful substance and can cause those exposed to develop fatal forms of cancer like mesothelioma.

Recent Reports of Exposure

A school in Muncie, IN, recently reported having found severe violations of the federal asbestos code.

According to reports, the asbestos was putting both the students and faculty at risk.

The Indiana Department of Labor also found that there were violations of the Occupational Safety and Hazard Act during renovations at Central High School.

Schools Across the Country Under Investigation

Reports claim that the incidents in Indiana aren't just state related but are occurring at schools throughout the country.

New York City Schools have been under investigation for asbestos related complications for the past decade.

Schools are apparently a regular site for asbestos due to the majority of older buildings on campuses.

When someone disturbs the material, fibers can be released into the air and people can become unknowingly exposed.
