Gustav, a Category 3 hurricane, hit Louisiana August 31. Ike, the third most destructive U.S. hurricane on record, made landfall just two weeks later, causing damage estimated at $31.5 billion. Hurricane Ike was the most destructive hurricane in Texas history, with winds up to 240 miles per hour.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) have advised the residents of areas affected by Hurricanes Gustav and Ike regarding the damage to their homes and the dangers that the homes may present.

Hurricane-Damaged Buildings May Release Toxic Asbestos Fibers

The hurricanes completely or partially demolished thousands of buildings in the Gulf Coast area and even further inland. Many of the damaged buildings were built before stricter laws were implemented regarding construction materials. Thus, toxins such as asbestos, lead and carbon monoxide may have been released after the hurricane damage.

Both FEMA and the EPA advise residents who are now returning to their homes and businesses to be very careful. The inhalation of asbestos fibers is the sole confirmed cause of the deadly cancer mesothelioma, and it can also cause lung cancer and asbestosis. Following are some of the precautions noted:

• First, make sure the local authorities have okayed your neighborhood for re-entry.
• Don’t try to remove materials that are contaminated yourself. Have professionals do the removal.
• If you’re not sure whether something contains asbestos or another toxic ingredient, treat it as if it does.
• Consider wearing a face mask for respiratory protection. N-95 masks are available at hardware stores.

Hundreds of Asbestos Materials

FEMA and the EPA are warning that there are hundreds of materials in a residence or public building that may contain asbestos, including:

• Stucco
• Flooring
• Ceiling tiles and finishes
• Plaster or drywall joint materials
• Brick and block mortar
• Vermiculite loose-fill insulation
• Insulation for pipes, boiler rooms
• Incandescent light fixture backing
