$24M Awarded to Family in FL

-April 30, 2008

A Miami-Dade County jury recently awarded the family of a man who was diagnosed with a fatal form of cancer $24.2 million.

The suit was filed against Honeywell International, the parent company of brake manufacturer, Bendix.

Asbestos Found in Brakes

Stephen E. Guilder, 50, spent the early years of his career repairing tractors and other farm equipment.

In September, Guilder was diagnosed with peritoneal mesothelomia, which is slowly taking his life and primarily affects the abdominal lining.

Suit Filed by Family

The Guilder family filed the suit against the brake company blaming them for the pain and suffering of their loved one.

The settlement is the largest compensatory jury verdict involving a single defendant in a Florida asbestos case.

However, David A. Jagolinzer, the attorney for the family says, “They (the family) would trade every dime of that for another day of his life.”

Guilder's oncologist says he expects his patients has a less than 10 percent chance of surviving beyond the fall of next year.
