A dangerous amount of asbestos was found at Safety Hall by crews working on a construction project related to earthquake safety.
Safety Hall Proves to be Unsafe because of Asbestos
Reports claim asbestos, which is a known carcinogen, was found by construction workers in the ceiling and floor tiles of Safety Hall.
Safety Hall serves as the main headquarters for the Police Department in the city
Asbestos was banned for use in the 1970’s but many buildings and homes built before this time still contain the substance.
Those who are exposed to asbestos are at risk for developing asbestos cancer and various forms of lung cancer and often aren’t diagnosed until it’s too late.
Construction on the building has been postponed due to the discovery of asbestos and the cost of the project is now going to rise significantly.
However, Redlands city officials state that the most important thing is to ensure the safety of their community and those who work within Safety Hall on a daily basis.
Many workers at the Police Department have voiced their concerns about the current conditions and are grateful action is being taken.
