According to recent reports, asbestos was found by construction workers near Bragaw Residence Hall at North Carolina State University.
The discovery has prompted an immediate removal to ensure the safety of the students and faculty.
Asbestos Exposure at Construction Site
The University has hired Raleigh’s Matrix Health and Safety Consultants, an asbestos removal service, to solve the potentially hazardous problem on campus.
“It’s standard with our renovations, especially with buildings built before the early 1970’s,” explains Barry Olson, associate director of Housing’s facilities division. “There is typically some level of asbestos containing materials in the construction and in this case, the materials are being disturbed.”
This disturbance as provoked the halting of the construction and the removal by the company in order to maintain the health and safety of the University.
Asbestos Removal Set to Begin
The asbestos removal is set to begin this summer and will reportedly involve the removal of floor and ceiling tiles, along with pipe insulation.
“We’re going through and not only removing it but…following all of the requirements through the EPA for safe removal and disposal,” says Olson of the collaboration between the University and the removal company.
