Asbestos Found at Middle School in New York

According to reports, the students at La Grange Middle School in New York were sent home early last week after the discovery of asbestos.

At the time the amount of asbestos present was not known, but school officials didn’t want to risk any exposure to the children or faculty.

Discovery of Asbestos Cancer Risks

During the installation of electrical cables in the school’s cafeteria, screws reportedly caused a wall perforation putting everyone at risk for asbestos exposure.

The school was built in 1966 before the ban of asbestos in the 1970’s and asbestos was a common material used in construction at the time.

Superintendent of Schools, Frank V. Pepe, Jr. made the decision to send the children and staff home early in order to ensure their safety.

Tests Conducted to Measure Level of Asbestos Cancer Risk

Immediately after the incident, an independent lab was hired to test air quality and determine how hazardous the situation is.

Although the presence of asbestos was apparent, those conducting the tests claim there is a minimal amount and it poses no real threat.

School officials have reported to parents that they intend to have annual asbestos checks at the school in order to prevent this type of problem in the future.
