Earlier this week, Baron & Budd P.C. announced that a $20 million settlement was reached in a suit that was filed against Georgia Pacific Corp.
The suit was filed after a woman was diagnosed with mesothelioma presumably after being exposed to asbestos at the company she was formerly employed with.
Exposure at Work
Joan Mahoney, 69, was employed part-time for a small construction company where she claims she was exposed to products that contained asbestos.
The products were supposedly manufactured by Georgia Pacific, which was named as the primary defendant in the suit.
Evidence which was brought to the jury's attention reportedly proved that the manufacturers were fully aware when they entered the asbestos business that exposure to asbestos could be deadly.
According to the suit, Georgia Pacific knew that its products were risky, yet continued to produce asbestos containing compounds.
Settlement Favors Plaintiffs
Joan and her husband, Daniel, reportedly received $20 million in the settlement, which will accost for their medical expenses and the pain and suffering that the couple has endured and will continue to endure in the future.
“To our knowledge, this is one of the largest asbestos verdicts of its kind,” says an attorney for the couple. “The results of this trial send a clear message that companies will be held accountable for endangering innocent people.”
