Mesothelioma Treatment Centers in Tennessee
Unfortunately, Tennessee is home to two major industrial operations that are known to pose asbestos hazards to workers, their families, and those who live near these facilities. While numerous industries are known for posing asbestos risks, the two biggest threats in Tennessee come from the paper and pulp mills and the electrical plants. Workers formerly or currently employed with International Paper (now called “Evergreen”) and those at the Tennessee Valley Authority may be at risk for developing asbestos related diseases including mesothelioma cancer. Other industries such as chemical companies, construction, demolition, electricity, plumbing may also pose a threat.
Asbestos Exposure in Tennessee
Between 1980 and 2000, 676 Tennessee residents died from an asbestos related disease. Most of these people came from the more populated areas of Tennessee, including Memphis, Nashville, Chattanooga, and Knoxville. Most of these tragic deaths were caused by mesothelioma cancer, a rare but aggressive and hard to treat disease caused almost exclusively by past asbestos exposure. Other victims died from other asbestos related diseases such as asbestosis, a non-cancerous but potentially fatal lung disease.
These diseases are all caused primarily from exposure to asbestos. Asbestos exposure can occur when a person breathes in or ingests tiny airborne fibers of asbestos that are invisible to the naked eye. Asbestos is found in hundreds of materials, can become airborne when the product is somehow compromised leading to the release of these tiny fibers. These fibers can also settle on clothing and brought into the home or other environment by a person who works in a place with asbestos.
