Feline Mesothelioma Cancer

Feline (cat) mesothelioma cancer is as serious a disease as human mesothelioma cancer. It can severely disable, even kill, a cat. Feline mesothelioma does not strike often, but when it does, a cat owner should know that there is as yet no cure for this feline cancer.

Asbestos Cancer Exposure Is the Cause

As with humans, feline mesothelioma is nearly always due to exposure to the toxic mineral asbestos, the fibers of which can be inhaled by humans, cats, dogs, farm animals, etc. The asbestos fibers create mesothelioma cancer by attacking the mesothelium, the tissue that lines the chest cavity of cats. A cat may inhale or lick up asbestos fibers from the floor or from the bottom of its paws. The fibers disrupt the normal functioning of the mesothelium and possibly other organs, and the cancer tissue causes symptoms such as:

  • breathing problems
  • wheezing
  • difficulty moving
  • coughing
  • sudden weight loss

Another Feline Disease

A veterinarian must test a cat to determine whether it has feline mesothelioma cancer. The symptoms listed above could signal a different feline disease - feline granuloma, which is a noncancerous infection. If your cat exhibits any signs of respiratory difficulties, or if it has an unexplained weight loss or trouble moving, take your cat to a veterinarian right away.

Prevent Feline Mesothelioma Cancer

Asbestos is present in millions of homes across the United States, particularly among those built before the 1980s. Thousands of construction products contain asbestos, such as:

  • drywall
  • bricks
  • insulation
  • pipe wrapping

When a home is renovated and these asbestos parts are disturbed, the asbestos fibers are likely to be released into the air, where a cat may become exposed to them. Keep cats away from renovations in your home, and away from construction/demolition sites in the neighborhood.

If you're considering a renovation of an older home, it's wise to contact an asbestos-abatement contractor for ideas on how to minimize the asbestos exposure for your cat and your family.
