Glassbestos
Glassbestos is a mixture of glass and asbestos, the toxic mineral that has been banned from use in many products because it causes lung cancer, asbestosis, and mesothelioma cancer. The combination of the two materials is made for thermal insulation and comes in flexible forms.
Glassbestos Installed in Thousands of Buildings
What's more, Glassbestos (sometimes spelled with one “s” - “glasbestos”) was known for its resistance to deterioration and rot, and for its strength. It was used up until the 1940s and to a lesser degree in later years, in thousands of buildings throughout the United States:
- homes
- theaters
- libraries
- office buildings and other workplaces
- schools and universities
- gymnasiums and recreation centers
Glassbestos is Still a Danger
Although Glassbestos is no longer newly installed in any buildings today, it is a danger to many people, such as:
- the workers who manufactured it
- those who installed it in buildings
- the family members of these workers
- the workers who do demolition or renovation of old buildings
Inhalation of the Asbestos Fibers
Glassbestos is no longer used in construction because the asbestos component is toxic. Asbestos is composed of millions of microscopic-sized fibers that can come loose when a product such as Glassbestos is manipulated (i.e., manufactured, installed, removed, or damaged), and the fibers become airborne.
Humans in the vicinity of these fibers may inhale them without even being aware that they are doing so. The asbestos fibers become lodged inside the body, disrupting normal cell function and making possible a variety of serious, even fatal, diseases.
If You Worked with Glassbestos
One of asbestos poisoning's most dangerous aspects is that the symptoms of the asbestos cancer caused by ingestion usually don't show themselves until years - often decades - after the poisoned individual was exposed to the asbestos. Indeed, many workers and family members who were exposed to Glassbestos in the 1940s are only now being diagnosed with mesothelioma cancer.
