Asbestos is a mineral that is found in the natural environment. It is a made of long, thin fibrous fibers that are durable and resistant to heat and friction. Because of its insulation capabilities, asbestos was once widely used in multiple asbestos industries including the shipbuilding, maritime and building industries. It wasn’t until the 1970s that its serious health risks were revealed, so it was used in thousands of building materials and manufactured products until it was banned in the 1980s. Even though asbestos use has been banned, it can still be found in older homes, automobiles, ships, etc.

Blue Asbestos

Blue asbestos, or crocidolite, has been known to be one of the worst types of asbestos, causing those who are exposed to it to develop fatal diseases including:

• Mesothelioma cancer
• Lung cancer
• Asbestosis
• Other asbestos cancers

Blue asbestos is found in asbestos deposits in Canada, the United States, Australia, China, Russia and South Africa. However, because of its harmful effects, blue asbestos is no longer mined.
