Asbestos Tremolite
Tremolite is a mineral that takes several forms, one of which is used as asbestos — a heat and friction-resistant group of minerals that are used in thousands of household and industrial asbestos products. Tremolite has caused its own share of asbestos related cancers, including mesothelioma, lung cancer and other organ cancers.
Tremolite is one of the most toxic varieties of asbestos. Although tremolite deposits can be found all over the world, it was named after a valley in Switzerland (the Val Tremola) where it was mined.
Asbestos Tremolite Contaminated Toys
Although the many uses of tremolite have been severely curtailed in the U.S. over the past few decades, in 2007 an alarming presence of tremolite was detected in The CSI: Crime Scene Investigation™ Fingerprint Examination Kit, sold by Planet Toys. This toy kit was sold in stores across the U.S.
Named after the popular TV show, the fingerprint kit contained tremolite asbestos contaminated powder that was supposed to be used for "dusting" fingerprints. The kit's instructions directed young users to blow away the powder after dusting. The act of blowing the dust, however, causes the fibers to become airborne, exposing the children and their families to dangerous asbestos fibers.
When fibers of tremolite asbestos are ingested, whether by inhalation or orally, the fibers often become lodged in the lungs or other organs, where they may initiate the disease process that culminates in asbestosis or cancer.
Tremolite in Libby, Montana
Tremolite was also mined at the infamous W.R. Grace mines in Libby, Montana. Thousands of people who worked in these asbestos mines or simply lived in or near the town have been sickened or killed by their exposure to asbestos in the air, on their clothes and in their water.
