Fibras de Asbesto Inhaladas

Muestras quirurgicas de pacientes con mesotelioma han demostrado que las fibras de asbesto todavia estaban atrapadas en los tejidos de los pulmones, de la pleura, y/o del mesotelium. Una vez que son inhaladas, las fibras de asbesto tienden a acumularse:

  • en la cavidad toracica
  • cerca de los lobulos inferiores de los pulmones, y
  • en la superficie del diafragma

En algunos pacientes, el tejido de la biopsia demuestra que las fibras de asbesto alcanzan el espacio intrapleural o la guarnicion mesotelial del espacio intrapleural. Aunque este estado se conoce como ldquo;libre de los pulmones,rdquo; sigue siendo una condicion peligrosa pone en riesgo la vida de uno.

Al saber que las fibras de asbesto se podrian ldquo;quitarrdquo; de los pulmones donde primero se atraparon conllevo a dos teorias sobre como las fibras de asbesto causan enfermedades:

  • las fibras de asbesto perforan el tejido del espacio pleural, danando el tejido y dando por resultado una inmunorespuesta inflamatoria
  • las fibras de asbesto son tan minusculas que pueden actuar en el nivel molecular, por ejemplo, danando el ADN de celulas y interrumpiendo la replicacion de celulas.

Estas siguen siendo teorias; el proceso verdadero del desarrollo de la enfermedad del asbesto todavia no se sabe.
