Millions of People Affected

Millions of workers and others in the U.S. have been heavily exposed to asbestos since the 1940s, the height of the asbestos-exposure years. Many veterans of World War II worked with asbestos as they served their country, only to find out decades later that they'd inhaled toxic fibers that would eventually ruin their health.

Other unfortunate victims didn't even work with asbestos — their homes, their schools, or even their spouse's or parent's workclothes provided asbestos fibers that couldn't be seen or detected.

9-11 Asbestos Exposure

Asbestos was back in the spotlight after the September 11, 2001 destruction of the World Trade Center. Hundreds of tons of asbestos in building materials were released into the environment when the towers fell, and thousands of people were adversely affected.

It's been estimated that about two-thirds of the rescue and recover workers developed new or worsened respiratory symptoms while at Ground Zero. Since some asbestos-caused diseases such as mesothelioma can take decades to manifest themselves, the full extent of the damage from the asbestos won't be known for many years.
